RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he said. "They were among numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
